L06. Your first ChatGPT prompt and Codex file

You will save a website explanation and three next steps. Allow about 45 minutes. Prepare a browser, email access or your Google Account, and Documents\AI-practice\about-me.txt. The main exercise can use Chat; creating the file through Codex is optional.

In class

The teacher enters a Chat prompt and checks the answer against two definitions. Then they show the difference between text in a conversation and a file Codex created in the selected folder.

Asking a question or assigning work

In ChatGPT, you can talk with a model or give it work involving tools. In the current interface, Chat is for conversation, Work for research and producing materials, and Codex for working on software and its files. [F202]

Chat can explain domains and hosting. To create a file in a folder, the assistant needs access to that folder.

Get your first answer

• Open chatgpt.com and sign in. To create an account, open the official pricing page [F221], select Get Free, and complete registration. If choosing Google sign-in, use the account from Lesson 5.
• Open a new conversation and select Chat. Type the request below in the message field. A request like this is also called a prompt.
• Read it before sending, then press the arrow button. Wait for the answer to finish.

Explain the difference between a domain and hosting
for a beginner. Give two short definitions,
one everyday analogy and an example using example.org.
Use no more than 100 words.

The capture from 28 October 2026 shows the equivalent Ukrainian prompt: 1 marks the text field and 2 the send button. Its interface is Russian; the prompt requests an answer in Ukrainian.

Ask Codex to create a small file

• On the official Quickstart page, open Download ChatGPT, choose Windows, install and launch the application. Sign into the same account. [F201]
• Select Codex from the ChatGPT dropdown. Under Projects, create a local project. Open its menu, choose Edit project → Add folder, and select Documents\AI-practice. Check that you attached the learning folder. [F225]
• Start a conversation in this project and enter:

Read about-me.txt. Create next-step.txt beside it:
three lines, one next step each for the website,
the My Day application and the video. Each step must
be manageable in 20 minutes. Do not change other files.

Press Enter to send the task.

This official OpenAI demo shows 1, an attached file, and 2, the instruction field. Its task cleans a CSV table, a table saved as plain text. Our exercise uses a text note.

If permission is requested, read the filename and proposed change. Then open next-step.txt in your learning folder through File Explorer.

Available features and usage depend on your plan. Check its conditions in your account. API access, which lets one program communicate with another, is billed separately; this exercise does not need an API key. [F203][F221]

Home practice

• In Chat, request a different everyday analogy for a domain and hosting, in no more than three sentences. Supply both definitions from domain-notes.txt so the explanation uses checked material.
• Save the answer as AI-practice\domain-notes-home.txt. Under it, identify what represents the website’s name and what represents storing its files. The definitions must remain accurate. Correct a confusing analogy; you do not need to install Codex for this task.

Self-test

• Which mode suits a straightforward explanation?
• Codex says “done”. Is that enough to establish that next-step.txt was saved?
• Does this lesson require an API key?
